Kelsee Lewis has a new school, a prima donna best friend, and one week to write a hit play. Throw in a self-obsessed mom and an absent executive dad, and it’s no wonder she has panic attacks—complete with time-warp special effects. When Kelsee meets comic book maven Quinn, she realizes the attacks give her the ability to rewind time.

Replaying life seems like the best way to erase mistakes. But will second chances leave Kelsee flailing in the orchestra pit alone?

Replay A timebending YA novel edition by Keira Lea Children eBooks

As an adult, I occasionally read YA books because I find them fresh and largely free of cynicism, graphic sex and needless violence. Also, it's fun to relive those days without actually, well, reliving them. This book was no exception. The book was fun; written in a breezy first-person narrative. I won't describe the plot, as others have already done so. I have read the preceding reviews, and I don't have a quibble with them.

However. The paranormal aspect of the novel feels tacked on. Kelsee is suffering from classic anxiety attacks, but about a third of the way through the book, she realizes they're not anxiety attacks, they're the ability to manipulate time. I had downloaded this book to my Kindle weeks before and had forgotten it was supposed to be paranormal. The shift took me completely by surprise, mainly because the author had not prepared me for it. It was as if she got bored with her own writing and wanted to pump it up.

At the beginning of the book, Kelsee's mother is portrayed in a very negative light. She is almost a caricature: overbearing, egotistical, annoying. After Kelsee's realization of her power, the mother is more realistically drawn--she is now seen to be hurting by Kelsee's preference for her father, and still smarting from the divorce. This also feels like a weird change. I'd almost bet the author put the book down for a while, then came back, and instead of starting over, wrote a different kind of novel (a better one) for the last two-thirds of the book. Then, at the end of the novel another twist is added in which seems like another tacked on bit, probably suggested by the publisher in case they wanted to add sequels.

The characters of the mother (in the last 2/3 of the novel), and the best friend, as well as of Kelsee herself, are pretty well drawn and their situations are realistic. I think girls will like it because of this. But for adults, it falls short. The plotting is haphazard, some character lines are developed but not seen through, the dialogue sometimes a little glib. But it's cheerful, earnest and does not drag. Definitely worth the $2.99 price tag.

Replay A timebending YA novel edition by Keira Lea Children eBooks Reviews

Kelsee Lewis; hopelessly introverted, wildly imaginative creative writer and self proclaimed geek enters into the world of divorced parents, a new school, changes in old friendships and discovering hopeless crushes. It's no wonder her panic attacks, or "little episodes" are happening more frequently. These overwhelming anxieties seem to make five hours pass in a few minutes, or a few seconds drag on like a few hours. Sometimes the world seems to come to a crushing stop! -Of course these anxieties are just psychological manifestations of a person seeking control over her world, just like her therapist says, right?

Keira Lea takes us into Kelsee's world with her great characters, her understanding of true teen problems and throws in just enough fantasy to make us all want to live there. I became happily lost in this world of young adults facing the difficulties of life.

Lea walks us into the acts and scenes of Kelsee's life as it becomes more and more challenging and her panic attacks seem to become something entirely new and more than a bit scary. Along the way we see this shy young woman taking charge of her own world in ways she never knew she could.

Discover Kiera Lea; a bright new author right at the beginning of what I hope will be a long run of great books and great reading!
If you could change the past, would you?

Sophomore Kelsee Lewis has been accepted to Dallas's premiere art school, Bonne. A talented playwright, she suddenly finds the herculean task of saving the fledging creative writing program, the one to which she has just been admitted, thrust upon her shoulders. And she only has a week to do it. In addition she's dealing with an emotionally-distant mother, a relationship with a bestie that seems to be dissolving, a crush on the cutest guy in school who just might be interested, a new friendship with a boy who believes in the unbelievable and a series of panic attacks that appear to stop time. With all the new changes and pressures in her life, Kelsee suddenly finds her new ability very useful. But what will changing the past mean for her future?

From the first few pages of Replay I knew I was going to like this book. The combination of the unique screenplay-inspired, "setting the scene" chapter intros and the main character's snarky, imaginative internal monologue made this book memorable and enjoyable. I don't often react audibly to books, but I actually found myself hysterically laughing out loud at some parts. I loved Kelsee. She was a great, engaging, dimensional, ultra-quirky character who just jumped off the page and won me over instantly with her awkward, lovable, SNL-inspired humor. Also, the relationships between Kelsee & her mother and Kelsee & Miranda were well developed and I loved the realizations Kelsee came to regarding these relationships as she came to better know herself throughout the story. What she ultimately does with those realizations is very interesting.

The paranormal aspect of this story is very intriguing as well; however I was hoping for it to be fleshed out a little bit more in regard to the technicality of how it worked and the ramifications of her ability. Regardless, time travel stories are always logically tricky, at times very convoluted, and frankly make my head hurt to think about all the theoretical outcomes and consequences. Replay, however, did not require Ibuprofen to figure it all out; it had a well-thought out plot and was easy to follow.

I'm interested to know if this was a stand alone novel or if we'll get another peek into Kelsee's world in another book? I hope so. I want to hear more of her story and while I'm making requests, I want more of Quinn as well. Lea is definitely an Indie author to keep your eye on.

<cue standing ovation>
